HFOSS Education

February 26, 2025 - Pittsburgh, PA

Meeting Location

David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Room 319-321

This event is an affiliated event of the SIGCSE Technical Symposium. See SIGCSE 2025 for general information about the location.

Overview

Student participation in Humanitarian Free and Open Source Software (HFOSS) provides an opportunity for learning software engineering technical and professional skills. HFOSS also engages students with computing for social good, which has been shown to be particularly appealing to women and other groups underrepresented in computing majors.

This full-day event will consist of morning and afternoon sessions that can be registered for separately. The overall goal is to bring together faculty interested in HFOSS education to learn about the latest efforts in this area and to work on identifying learning materials that will support further expansion of HFOSS education. The focus for each session will be as follows:

HFOSS Education Update – The morning session will provide an update and discussion of faculty efforts in HFOSS education. The focus will be on education-oriented HFOSS projects, open source projects that have a humanitarian purpose and are also designed to support HFOSS education. These projects are started by and managed by one or more academic institutions. Examples include LibreFoodPantry, Open Energy Dashboard, FarmData, and Submitty. Presentation and discussion will cover status of these projects and issues and opportunities for starting or joining an education-oriented HFOSS project.

HFOSS Learning Materials – The afternoon session will explore learning materials on teachingopensource.org, HFOSS education kits, and an effort to create Runestone hosted materials for HFOSS education. There will also be discussion time for attendees to identify learning materials that are not currently available that would be helpful in teaching about HFOSS.
