Stage 1 Activities

Below is the schedule for the pre-workshop activities. Participants should finish all activities in a timely fashion in order to be able to fully benefit from the face-to-face portion of the workshop. NOTE: Many of the activities below could take much more time than the estimate given. If you find yourself going over the time allotment, you may be going deeper than is needed to prepare for POSSE Stage 2. While deeper exploration is welcomed, once you pass the estimated time you should feel free to wrap up the activity, complete the deliverable, and move on.

Part A

Approximately 5-6 hours

The activities in these first weeks will start to introduce you to the world of FOSS projects, the community of faculty interested in student participation in FOSS projects, encourage you to start thinking about where you might use HFOSS activities in your own courses, and to consider the intellectual property law concepts that make open source possible.

Some activities have an assigned deliverable. For those activities, post your results in a Google Doc in the Stage 1 folder. Please create a document labeled with your name. Place your responses within the document using the headers for the Stage 1 activities.

1. Introduction to FOSS (Activity) – 60 minutes
2. Teaching Open Source (Activity) (Join TOS) - 30 minutes
3. FOSS in Courses (Activity) - 60 minutes
4. Introduction to Copyright and Licensing for FOSS (Activity) - 60 minutes
5. Introduction to Git/GitHub (Activity) - 60 minutes
6. Zoom call - 30-60 minutes

   • What ideas do you have about courses and activities in which you might use HFOSS?
   • Discuss Stage 2 workshop

Part B

Approximately 4-5 hours

The activities in these weeks will give you a chance to work with Git, to explore how FOSS projects are typically organized, and to explore educational HFOSS projects that have been developed by faculty and students.

Some activities have an assigned deliverable. For those activities, post your results in your Google Doc in the Stage 1 folder.
