Community Guidelines

Purpose:

These guidelines provide standards for participating in and contributing to the TeachingOpenSource (TOS) community in order to create a supportive environment for TeachingOpenSource. By participating in the TeachingOpenSource community, including the web site, mailing lists, and other spaces, you agree to these guidelines. All contributions to the site must support the mission statement and generally support learning from, and participation in, open source projects.

TOS is an environment in which diverse individuals can collaborate and interact in a positive and affirming way. Examples of behavior that contributes to creating this sort of environment include:

Using welcoming and inclusive language
Being respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences
Gracefully accepting constructive criticism
Focusing on what is best for the overall community
Showing empathy towards other community members

Scope:

These guidelines apply to all TOS community content and spaces including public and private communications both online and offline.

Become a Contributor:

Contact the owner.tos@gmail.com to become a contributor to the teachingopensource.org site.

Environment:

The TOS community is a space where diverse people can collaborate and interact around the practices of teaching open source. Therefore: Do:

Respect all community members including differing viewpoints and experiences.
Be courteous in all interactions.
Contribute content related to teaching and learning within open source software projects. This may include teaching/learning materials, current events related to TeachingOpenSource, open source education research results, instructor and student experience stories of participation in open source projects, etc.
Be supportive of the community. Ask yourself how you can improve the community.
Add value to the TOS community by participating in discussions and events.
Remember that all content is public and may be seen by anyone.
When you make changes that improve teaching materials or other content, please contribute those back to the community by adding your materials to the repository and your experiences to the Success Stories → Send your patches back! It’s how things improve 🙂

Don’t:

Post content that includes threats, harassment, lewdness, overt sexual content, illegal content, hate speech or otherwise violates any applicable law.
Communicate or act in an inappropriate, malicious, hateful, offensive, unwelcome or illegal manner.
Broadcast spam, including: content not related to the mission of TOS, links that direct users to external commercial sites, or content with misleading titles.
Offer to sell or purchase products.
Publish confidential information.
Publish other people’s private information or content without permission. This includes publishing full names.
Publish or link to malicious content.
Publish content that infringes any copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, right of privacy, or right of publicity.
Publish content you are not licensed to publish.
Publish advertising, political, or other content not related to the mission of TOS.

Moderation:

All contributions by contributors will be moderated. Editors and administrators will approve all contributions. Trusted contributors will be promoted to editors.

Reporting & Consequences of Violations:

If you are being harassed, notice harassment by a member of the TOS community, or if you notice any behavior that does not conform to these guidelines, please report to owner.tos@gmail.com.

Site Editors may refuse to publish content that does not comply with these guidelines. In addition, Site Editors reserve the right to remove any content that doesn’t follow the guidelines. When possible, content authors will be notified and given the opportunity to change the content. However, if an author refuses to abide by site guidelines, the Site Administrators reserve the right to expel the author from these spaces.
