[edit] Bid status

[edit] Focus areas

  • Type of event: 2 day POSSE Basics workshop.
  • Disciplinary focus: CS and Software Engineering.
  • Open Source project: Fedora, a major Linux distribution.

Need letter from an established contributor of that project describing how that project would accommodate and mentor POSSE participants during that date range. I'll write to Planet Fedora and see if we can get a bunch of contributors willing to help remotely for the weekend. Mel Chua 16:15, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Logistics

  • Date range: TBD, schedule poll closes March 4, 2011 - will choose date on March 5th.
  • Proposed venue: Red Hat Headquarters, Raleigh NC.
    • Cost: $0 - venue donated by Red Hat.
    • Configuration: Moveable tables and chairs, capacity 40. 4 whiteboards and 2 projectors, ample electrical outlets throughout.
    • Connectivity: Arranging with Red Hat IT to provide guest access to high-speed wifi for the weekend, ensuring that ssh and irc ports are open.
  • Infrastructure expectations for participants: As of now, participants will all bring their own laptops, and we will arrange with participants to dual-boot or install an appropriate Fedora image on a VM before arrival. I'll also check with Red Hat's IT department to see if we have computer labs or laptop carts that are borrowable - that would be an extra bonus - but fallback is that people bring their own laptops, set up beforehand. Mel Chua 16:15, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
  • Lodging: Sebastian looking into this. There are no hotels within walking distance of the Red Hat office, so we'll also have to factor in a rental van + carpooling once we find out who our attendees are, etc. Setting an arbitrary maximum of $150/night/room group rate, and will encourage attendees to coordinate with each other for roommate pairing if cost is an issue. Attendees will be responsible for their own lodging; we'll get a group rate and coordinate rides from one hotel, but if people live nearby, want to stay somewhere else, etc. they can do that too and make their own transit arrangements.
  • Nearby restaurants: I need to remember the names of these places! Mel Chua 16:15, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
    • The Pit suggested for graduation dinner; ridiculously good high-end BBQ, casual dress. This was on Bobby Flay's Throwdown and the pitmaster here beat Bobby Flay's BBQ rather soundly. It's that good. (Considerations: if we have a lot of vegetarian attendees, we may need to rethink this.)
    • Middle Eastern fast food within walking distance. Cheap and delicious.
    • Bruegger's Bagels within walking distance. Breakfast!
    • Mexican sit-down within walking distance. Moderately cheap and delicious, huge portions.
    • McDonald's, KFC, Bojangles, Taco Bell within long walk/short drive distance, if people want fast food.
    • Ole Time BBQ within short drive distance, cheap and excellent BBQ.
    • Greek fast food within long walk/short drive distance.
    • Italian sit-down within long walk/short drive distance. Moderately cheap and delicious, huge portions.
    • Plenty of incredible food within a 30min drive; nearby Durham was voted "Foodiest City In America" for a reason.
  • Deadlines: None as of now; the Red Hat office is pretty abandoned on the weekends so getting space there should not be a problem. Need to find out how much lead time IT needs to set up connectivity, but it should not be less than 2 months.

She has assisted with the TOS presence at OSCON 2010, FIE 2010, and the upcoming SIGCSE 2011.
  • Sebastian Dziallas was responsible for logistics of POSSE Doha in winter 2011. Sebastian organized the TOS presence at Linuxcon 2010 and assisted with the TOS presence at FIE 2010 and the upcoming SIGCSE 2011. He is also coordinating the TOS presence at OSCON 2011 and LinuxCon 2011, in addition to a bid for FUDCon (Fedora community conference) in 2012.

[edit] Cool stuff

  • http://fosscon.org/ is also happening July 23rd in Philadelphia, PA. Talking with JonathanD about some sort of live-peek-in to the event via webcam, and setting up a flat panel TV so that attendees can answer questions from professors through the day.
  • http://www.communityleadershipsummit.com/ is also July 23rd-24th in Portland, OR. We had attendees from the first CLS sign copies of Karl Fogel's book, "Producing OSS," for attendees from the first POSSE... we should do something with this again! Who's going?
