[edit] Schedule

Our schedule will consist of the following sessions, that might be interrupted by sessions with community members.

  • public profile exercise
  • vital stats & 5 minute intro
  • timeline merge sheet
  • skill identification & how to move forward
  • reflection goes here

[edit] Introduction, Culture and Communication

Quick round introducing our objectives for the day, introducing who's here, then dive straight into learning IRC, wikis, and collaborative text editing -- this includes the public profile exercise (experienced profs will be paired up with newcomers!)

[edit] Project Introduction

An overview of the community and project you'll be making your first contribution to this afternoon -- this includes Mel's 5 minute Intro to FOSS exercise. Heidi emailed Sebastian a sample spreadsheet for July! (FOSS scavenger hunt)

Learning objectives: Take the "vital stats" of an unfamiliar project - how do you assess the pulse of a project community before deciding to dive into it?

  • Break into small groups and hand out "vital stats" worksheet; have teams go over it with instructors roaming.
  • In small groups, apply the vital stats worksheet to a likely project.

End deliverable: Identification of a likely project to be used in your class and associated "vital stats" sheet for that project.

[edit] Project Timeline and Mapping

  • Have faculty members lay out their syllabus
  • Have faculty members identify the major "time events" in a FOSS project. Place these on the timeline merge sheet. These events may include:
    • Release dates
    • Freeze dates
    • Beta test dates
    • Hackathons or other meetings
  • Map projected assignments from the syllabus into the timeline merge sheet
  • Identify any communication, resources or other requirements needed by students at any given point in the semester.
  • Evaluate the mapping between the FOSS project and your syllabus
    • Are there topics that could be rearranged to better fit the FOSS schedule?
    • Are there additional deliverables that would fit the FOSS schedule?
    • Project the impact of a change in a time event in the FOSS schedule. What would happen if the project schedule slips? What modifications could you make to accomodate this?

[edit] Skill Identification

  • Create a list of tools:
    • Used for installation
    • Support development
    • Used by the community
  • Create a learning plan for yourself to learn the tools.
    • Include in your learning plan the download and installation of the project as well as the development environment.
    • Identify a simple bug that you could fix.
  • Sign up for POSSE Modules.
  • Make sure to take your worksheets with you.
  • Consider checking in with other POSSE attendees.
