[edit] Project Description

About Rehearsal Assistant:

Rehearsal Assistant for the Android mobile phone platform allows you to record your thoughts and observations during an event, and to review and email the recordings afterward. If you are a choreographer or director watching a rehearsal of your work, this can help you make note of the feedback you want to share with the cast. If you are a researcher in the field or observing an experiment, this can help you record events of interest. If you are a musician or writer, it can help you record and remember your spontaneous moments of inspiration.

About urbanSTEW:

By exploring the synergy between art and technology, urbanSTEW seeks to push the boundaries of how both art and technology are created and consumed. Our goals are two-fold: to leverage technology in exploring new ways in which art can be conceived, developed, and delivered in order to place audience members in active, participatory, and contributing roles; and to leverage art as a test-bed and inspiration in developing new technologies whose application extends beyond the arts.

About you:

By participating in the development of Rehearsal Assistant, interested students will get an opportunity to grow their Java and Android development skills, and work with collection, storage, and playback of audio, video, and text based media. Educators, whether coming from an open source background or an arts background, can join us in our exploration of art and technology, and expose their students to this dynamic and rewarding field.

[edit] Mentor Capacity

We are interested in working with both students and educators. We can provide students with mentorship on software development and domain-specific knowledge, in a multi-disciplinary collaborative environment centered around this project.

We are also interested in working with educators:

  • with those connected to the performing arts, in increasing the teaching of open source tools in the art curriculum, and in involving students in open source development through testing, feedback, and application design;
  • with those connected to open source development, in increasing the awareness of potential applications in the arts.

In addition to mentoring and collaborating online, we would be open to mentoring and collaborating in person. We are located in Tempe, AZ, U.S.A.

We are very passionate about what we do, and welcome any additional opportunities (such as workshops, presentations, e.t.c.) that match our interests and mission.

For more information about us, you can visit http://urbanstew.org/, or browse the archives of our mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/urbanstew/.

While our core group is limited to a single geographic location, and we often meet in person, we have moved much of our communication and collaboration online. If you are interested in working with us, we will do our best to make you an equal part of our team, even if you are participating remotely. Expanding our developer base to include more contributors (and ideas) from around the world is a very important goal for us.
